About ChatYYC
ChatYYC is a local information publication for Calgary, Alberta, combining an AI assistant for on-demand questions with editorial guides written by people.
What this site is
ChatYYC covers Calgary and Calgary Metropolitan Region. It has two distinct parts, and the distinction matters:
- The AI assistant. A conversational tool that answers questions about Calgary — events, dining, transit, city services and neighbourhoods. Answers are generated at the moment you ask, and are not reviewed by a person before you see them.
- The editorial guides. Researched, written and reviewed guides published under Calgary Guides. These are human-authored, dated, and cite the official sources they rely on.
We are explicit about which is which because they carry different levels of reliability. Treat the assistant as a fast research starting point, and treat the guides as reference material with named sources.
How the AI assistant works
When you ask a question, the assistant retrieves relevant local context from a curated knowledge base for Calgary, passes that context to a large language model along with instructions scoped to Calgary, and streams the response back to you. Several language models are used in a fallback chain for reliability.
Two honest caveats. First, language models can state things confidently and incorrectly — verify anything consequential, such as a fare, fee, deadline or opening time, against the official source. Second, the assistant is not an official channel: it cannot submit a request, pay a fee or act on your behalf. See our editorial standards for how we treat AI-generated answers.
How we are funded
The site is funded by display advertising. That funding does not buy coverage. Advertisers do not review or approve editorial content, and we do not accept payment for coverage or for inclusion in a guide. We do not use affiliate links, so we earn nothing from any outbound link.
